More than 25% of the world’s wheat production is contaminated with mycotoxins. The growth and propagation of molds and their spores is encouraged by factors such as monocultures for higher crop yield and by the effects of mechanical harvesting methods, in particular shortened stalks and blemished grains. The economic losses are enormous. Even the minutest quantities of mycotoxins influence the health of animals and the commercial success of animal husbandry. Among the negative effect of mycotoxins are disturbances in fertility, weakening of the immune system, reduced ingestion of foodstuffs and many other damaging consequences. |
